Iron Man was not only one of my favorite superhero movies but one of my favorite movies period and now we have its sequel. Does it live up to its original or does he not power up to meet the occasion?
Answering this question is a lot harder than I thought it would be. For the most part, Iron Man 2 was a good movie but on many levels I also thought it was just “ok.” On the bright side, I didn’t think any part of the movie was bad by any means but a lot of the movie wasn’t great. The movie’s basic storyline, without giving any spoilers away, is about the ramifications of Tony Stark revealing to the world that he is Iron Man. There is also a supervillain, a second supervillain, Warmachine (Iron Man’s Sidekick/Partner), S.H.I.E.L.D., Black Widow, Tony Stark’s love triangle with his assistant and Black Widow, Tony Stark’s surprising new illness, and much more. And now we run into our first problem with the film: there are too many subplots and each one was only given a short period of screen time until they moved onto the next plot. Each one was given ample time by the end of the film but cutting from one plot to the next was just upsetting, and for some, probably confusing.
